Pentagon to provide funds, help for troops seeking abortions

According to a new department policy issued on Thursday, the Pentagon will give travel funding and support for troops and their dependents who seek abortions but are stationed in places where they are currently banned. Additionally, the military will enhance privacy safeguards for people seeking medical care.

The order issued by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin explains the rights and protections that military personnel and their dependents would receive regardless of where they are stationed. This was a major worry of troops following the June overturning of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court.

Abortion access has emerged as a significant issue in the midterm elections. This week, President Joe Biden said that the first measure he sends to Capitol Hill in 2019 will codify abortion laws if Democrats hold enough seats in Congress to enact the bill.

In a conference with NowThis News, he stated that he would support a federal fund to cover some travel expenses for people who must have the procedure.

He stated, “I do support it, and I have openly pushed businesses to do so.” “As president of the United States, I have publicly pushed them, saying, ‘This is what you should be doing,'”

In the Dobbs v. Jackson decision, the Supreme Court stripped women of their constitutional safeguards for abortion and left it to the states to determine whether the practice is allowed inside their boundaries. In the subsequent months, abortion has been prohibited or severely limited in over a dozen states.
