Cheney: 1/6 panel won’t let Trump turn testimony into circus
The House committee investigating the Capitol riot will not allow Donald Trump to turn a prospective live television appearance of his summoned testimony into a “circus” and “food fight” as legislators attempt to ensure he complies with their requests, the vice head of the committee warned on Sunday.
Next month, the committee is requesting that Trump testify under oath and provide papers pertinent to its probe. Trump allegedly informed his associates that he would consider complying with the subpoena if he could respond to questions during live testimony in order to avoid a difficult and long court struggle.
Rep. Liz Cheney did not react immediately on Sunday when asked if the committee would consider broadcasting his hearing live. She stated that the committee will not want Trump’s testimony to devolve into a “food fight” on television, similar to Trump’s televised appearances such as one of his 2020 presidential debates, and she warned that the committee will take action if he does not comply with the subpoena.
Cheney, R-Wyo., stated on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that the questioning of the former president under oath will continue. “It may take many days, but it will be completed with the rigor, discipline, and seriousness it merits. We will not permit him to turn this situation into a circus.”
